Dear Amherst-Pelham Regional and Northampton Communities:

Today, many students came to school expressing feelings about the Presidential Election in our similar school communities. Some indicated that they were in need of support or that they are concerned for their friends. In general, our response has been to provide instructional routines which benefit students; to reassure students that our districts do not tolerate discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, gender identity, religion, disability, national origin, sexual orientation, economic status, or ethnic background; and to provide additional support from our mental health teams. Additionally, our staff has facilitated dialogue and guided discussions about the election as students have raised the topic to make classrooms safe for all students to discuss their viewpoints regardless of their reaction to the election.

We are aware that there is a range of opinions and emotions from many individuals in our communities. Our talented staff will continue to be sensitive to students who express concerns about the election results and will partner with students and families to support them in whatever way is needed.

If you feel that your child would benefit from additional support or a check-in based on what you are seeing at home, please let your child’s teacher know and we will ensure that this support is offered. We are fully committed to maintaining our districts as safe places for all students to learn and interact with others in their school community.

Amherst School Committee Vacancy Announcement from the Amherst Select Board

A vacancy on the Amherst School Committee will be filled on Thursday October 13, 2016 at a joint meeting of the Select Board and the remaining members of the Amherst School Committee. Interested candidates must submit a Letter of Interest to the Select Board office by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2016.

Letters of Interest may be submitted by email to selectboard@amherstma.gov (preferred) or via hard copy to Select Board, Town Hall, 4 Boltwood Ave. Amherst MA 01002. Please include a summary of your reasons for wishing to serve on the Amherst School Committee and your qualifications and experience. All submissions will be distributed to Select Board and Amherst School Committee members as they are received, and will be available to the public on the Town web site in the Select Board’s packet materials for the October 13, 2016 meeting. Certain personal information will be redacted upon request. Please note that while candidates are
welcome to make the public aware of their interest, members of the Select Board, Amherst School Committee, and staff will not release the number of candidates, or candidate names or other identifying information, until after the Letters of Interest appear in the Select Board packet materials for the October 13, 2016 meeting.

Candidates who have submitted a Letter of Interest will need to attend the Thursday October 13, 2016 joint meeting at 5:00 p.m. The joint meeting will be held in the Town Room on the second floor of Town Hall and will be broadcast live by Amherst Media on channel 17.

Vacancies in elected Town-wide office are governed by MGL Chapter 41 Section 11. A roll call vote of both bodies is required, and at least five positive votes must be made for the selected individual, regardless of how many members of the Select Board and Amherst School Committee are present.

The person elected on October 13, 2016 will serve until the next Annual Town Election, to be held on March 28, 2017, and has the option to seek election on the Town ballot through the standard nomination process. The Amherst School Committee term that ended with resignation on September 26, 2016 will be on the March 28, 2017 Town ballot as a two year term. The new Amherst School Committee member also serves on the Amherst-Pelham Regional School Committee http://www.arps.org/administration/school_committee, and must be sworn in at the Amherst Town Clerk’s office prior to participating in meetings of either body.

Smith College women’s varsity and club athletics programs will be hosting free clinics for all girls in grades 3-5. Clinics will include track and field, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, tennis, ultimate frisbee, softball, rock wall, volleyball and basketball. All participants will receive a t-shirt, certificate and snacks.

No equipment is needed by participants. However, comfortable athletic attire and sneakers are recommended.

The event includes a food court, chili tasting contest cider donut eating contest, cheese tasting, fatbike demo and riding, baseball toss, mobile disc golf experience, dusk superpipe sledding hill, wagon rides from Muddy Brook, frosty fun kids carnival, family ice sculpture contest, UMass stage crew dance and clinic, golf contests, face painting, best in snow dog show, cardboard sled race, Zumba in the snow and entertainment from Jack Frost and the Rose Cheeks and Pineapple Dance’s Elektrik Boyz and Jam Dance.

Jones Library “On The Same Page” Community Read

The Jones Library is holding its fourth “On the Same Page” community reading program, this year featuring the book Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by bestselling author Atul Gawande. This book has started a national conversation about the deep flaws in our society’s current treatment of people with serious illness and those who are facing end of life. The entire Amherst community is invited to read the book and participate in the upcoming programs and events.

As an added dimension this year, our local community read is part of a regional community read. In collaboration with Cooley Dickinson Health Care medical experts, local libraries and other agencies are sponsoring discussions throughout Hampshire and Franklin Counties in March and April, as well as offering additional programming to support the themes explored in this bestselling book.

The following series of programs will be held during March and April at the Jones Library, and are based on topics and themes from the novel.

LSSE 20% Discount on Youth Classes

One-time 20% discount on youth classes at LSSE. Amherst families who meet the following criteria (which will include most families) qualify for the discount (see flyer attached). The discount serves our effort to make youth and family programs more affordable to low- and middle-income families; in addition, LSSE has expanded its scholarship guidelines so that more families will now be eligible for financial assistance.

Here are the criteria for the 20% youth scholarship:

  • Siblings registering for the same program at the same time;
  • Youth who participated in an LSSE Program within the year;
  • Any youth new to an LSSE Program

Use your SNAP/EBT card at the Amherst Farmer’s Market. Every Saturday in Amherst Center from 8:00am-1:30pm until 11/21/15. To use your EBT card: (1) Go to the market booth in front of the Lord Jeffery Inn on Boltwood Avenue; (2) Give the person your SNAP/EBT card. They will give you tokens. These tokens act as “cash” at the market; (3) Use your tokens at any vendor booth.

What Your Child Needs for Field Day

Wildwood Field Day is an opportunity for the Wildwood community to celebrate the end of the school year with their grade-level peers by participating in many fun activities. This letter is to let you know what your child needs to bring in order to participate.

Most of the Field Day activities will be taking place outside. Therefore, all students need sunscreen, and hats are recommended. There will be water activities, and students should bring a comfortable change of clothes (if possible) they do not mind getting wet and playing games in. A lot of the activities include constant movement, and it is a requirement for students to wear sneakers while participating.

Family Survey, Due 6/16

So far 106 out of 325 families have completed the Wildwood Family Survey. We would like to hear from all of you. Please take the time (about 15 minutes) to answer the questions on the survey if you have not done so already. The purpose of the survey is to provide us with information about your experience of Wildwood. Our School Council will analyze the results to help guide our School Improvement Plan for next year. Amherst-Pelham Regional School Committee blasts standardized tests in letter to Legislature

AMHERST — The Amherst-Pelham Regional School Committee on Tuesday took a stand against standardized tests.

It also praised plans for schedule changes at both the high school and middle school, which were presented during Tuesday’s meeting.

The board voted unanimously to send a letter favoring a moratorium on high-stakes testing in general and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test in particular to the Massachusetts Joint Committee on Education. On Thursday, the committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on House Bill 340, which would remove the requirement that a student must pass a standardized test to graduate and would place a three-year ban on using the PARCC test.

“Multiple studies have demonstrated that high-stakes testing does not improve schools and their ability to educate all our students,” reads the letter, which was written by School Committee member Katherine Appy of Amherst. “The tests measure a narrow set of practiced skills that lack depth and a demonstration of ongoing curricular learning.”

The ARPS PGO will have a Spring Public Meeting on June 17th from 6:30 – 8:00 PM at the Crocker Farm Elementary in the Community Room. Items to be discussed are: End of Year Wrap Up, Valley Gives & future other joint fundraising opportunities, voting on new representatives and other new business.

ARPS PGO is a Registered 501c3 Massachusetts Charity encompassing the individual PGOs of the ARHS, ARMS, Crocker Farm & Wildwood.The ARPS PGO mission is to support the education of children within our schools through fundraising, supplemental programming and volunteer efforts.  We help build community by fostering relationships among the schools, parents, teachers and staff. All parents and guardians are welcome to attend and participate in the meeting.

Summer Read-a-thon, Due MONDAY 6/8

ABC Best Books for Children (cover)It’s time to sign up for the Summer Read-a-thon! Check your child’s backpack for the registration form. It’s due THIS Monday, June 8th. In the past, the Read-a-thon was designed as a fundraiser to raise money for the Wildwood Library. This year the district has provided funding for the libraries so we are not asking for pledges for the summer Read-a-thon. Instead, we are asking that you help us reach the Wildwood Million Minutes Reading Challenge!

Did you know… If every Wildwood student and their families read for 30 minutes/day for the 70 days of summer vacation that our community could read for over 1,000,000 minutes THIS SUMMER?! Help us meet the Wildwood Million Minutes Reading Challenge.

We want to reemphasize that money donations are NOT a part of the Read-a-thon this year; however, if parents are still interested in donating to the library to grow our collections, you can make a check payable to the Wildwood PGO and write “For Library” in the memo line. This money will be given directly to the library to purchase more books.

All-you-can-eat pancakes & coffee. Multigrain pancakes made from ingredients donated by local farms. And, as usual, we’ll have real maple syrup, live music, fabulous prizes, and tons of community spirit! NEW for 2015: Gluten-free pancakes and local sausages!

Excellence in Supporting Special Education, Call for Nominations, 6/1

SEPAC (Special Education Parent Advisory Council) is currently accepting nominations of individuals who go the extra mile to support our special education community. The Recognition of Excellence in Special Education is an important way for the community to thank those who through dedication, creativity, patience, and determination help students receiving special education to experience success.

Nominations must be emailed to basilstew@comcast.net by June 1st or sent to Student Services 170 Chestnut St Amherst, MA 01002 ATTN: SEPAC. Nominations must be postmarked by June 1st.

PGO Meeting & Elections, 5/26

pgo-needs-youPlease mark your calendar and join us on Tuesday, May 26 for our End-of-Year PGO Meeting & Elections (5:30-7:30pm). We invite you to step up and into an open Leadership Committee position.

Special invited guests Mike Morris (ARPS Asst. Superintendent) and Katherine Appy (School Committee Chair), will also share updates on the Wildwood Building Project. According to meeting minutes, three options are currently under consideration: build a new school, reorganize the district by having two schools, or to add/renovate the current building.

There are so many positions to fill! Open positions include: Co-chair (2 positions), Treasurer, Secretary, Communications Chair, and Fundraising Chair. The Leadership Committee oversees community-building events, supports and appreciates Wildwood’s teachers and staff, and manages the annual budget.

Multicultural Fair 2015, Wahoo!

The food was awesome. The fashion show was wonderful. The performances and demonstrations were fantastic. The photographers were extremely generous and tireless. The posters at the school were AMAZINGLY well done. Thank you to everyone who stayed and helped clean up.

Hope you had a good time! It takes a village to pull off events like these. For next year, please consider joining the fair planning committee or PGO for next year.
