AMHERST AREA NAACP AND AMHERST HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
At the event, sponsored by the Amherst Area NAACP and the Town of Amherst Human Rights Commission, community members will join to sing the Black National Anthem. All are invited to sing, and to bring noisemakers to make a joyful noise. Community leaders will give brief remarks.
“Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often referred to as the Black National Anthem, was written in 1900 by brothers James Weldon Johnson (lyrics) and John Rosamond Johnson (music). It was first performed as a poem by African American children at a segregated school in Florida.
